Inside a Modern Breeding Program: Bloodlines, Genetics, and Timing

Great breeding programs are mare programs. The stallion contributes half the genetics but the mare contributes the uterine environment, the early handling temperament, and the day-to-day teaching the foal receives for six months.

Genetic panels are non-negotiable. We test for HERDA, PSSM1, GBED, MH, and breed-specific conditions such as hydrocephalus in Friesians before any pairing is confirmed.

Timing follows the mare, not the calendar. Ultrasound-guided follicle tracking gives a far better conception rate than breeding to a fixed date.

Every pairing at the ranch is chosen to correct a specific trait — hind-leg strength, shoulder angle, or rideability — never to repeat a fashionable pedigree.
